Whiskey Daru

Whisky in any language.

Two words for the same good thing — whiskey in the West, daru across South Asia. One love: the peat-soaked, brine-kissed single malts of Islay. Welcome to the dram.

The Name

What on earth is Daru?

Daru (दारू / ਦਾਰੂ / దారు) is the everyday word for spirits and booze across much of South Asia — Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu, and beyond. Say "daru" at a table in Delhi or Lahore and everyone knows exactly what you mean.

Say "whiskey" at a table in Edinburgh or Louisville and you get the same knowing nod. So Whiskey Daru is a little bridge — East meets West, both raising a glass to the same amber pleasure.

This is a hobby site, made by a fan, for the joy of it. My heart lives on one small Scottish island where the malt is dried over peat smoke and the sea gets into everything. If you love Islay too, you're among friends. If you're just curious — pull up a stool, this round's on me.

— Slàinte mhath & cheers 🥃

Tasting Notes

The Drams

An Islay-forward shelf. Notes are one fan's opinion — the only review that truly counts is the one in your own glass.

Scores are pure whim on a 100-point scale. Don't @ me.

How to Drink It

The Serves

Neat

Room temperature, no ice, a Glencairn glass if you have one. This is how to meet a whisky for the first time.

A drop of water

A few drops opens up the aromas and tames the alcohol heat — especially on cask-strength bottlings. Not cheating. Encouraged.

The ice debate

Ice mutes flavour but cools the burn. One big cube melts slowly. Your dram, your rules — purists be damned.

Penicillin cocktail

The modern classic, and a gift to peat lovers.

  • 60ml blended Scotch
  • 22ml lemon juice
  • 22ml honey-ginger syrup
  • Float ~10ml Islay single malt on top

Shake the first three with ice, strain over fresh ice, float the Islay malt so the smoke hits your nose first.

Whisky Highball cocktail

Tall, cold, criminally easy.

  • 45ml whisky
  • Top with chilled soda water
  • Lots of ice, lemon twist

Build in a tall glass, one gentle stir. A smoky malt here is a revelation on a warm evening.

Rusty Nail cocktail

Two ingredients, all swagger.

  • 45ml Scotch
  • 20ml Drambuie

Stir with ice, strain over a big cube, lemon twist. Adjust the Drambuie to taste.

Read each one closely. You may not be certain, until the last line, whether I'm writing about a woman or a whisky — and that uncertainty is the entire point. Pour something. Pick one. Take your time.
